24. Interior: Before and after

The main aim of this project has been to create a low-energy, comfortable house. But it has also enabled the transformation of a 1970s bungalow to a layout better suited to modern living. The open plan living space is fabulous: flooded with daylight, and the perfect place to socialise with friends and family over good food and wine. There's a porch to shelter from the frequent Lake District rain. The utility room works with an outdoor lifestyle: a place to wash muddy boots and hang damp clothes. The gym provides a place to keep fit when the weather conspires against outdoor activities (which is often!). There are now two full bathrooms: well able to cope with outdoorsy people needing a hot shower at the end of the day. And the house provides a tranquil place to simply sit and read, enjoying the westerly views across to Scout Scar.
