15. It's starting to look like a Passive House

The project has now been on site for three months. Whilst great progress has been made, it’s so far looked pretty much like a standard building project. But things are beginning to get exciting! The floor is going in, and I can see the transformation from a 1970s bungalow to a proper Passive House starting to happen. This photo shows the floor build up:

  1. ProClima Solitex Plus membrane draped over and down between joists. This supports the insulation laid on top and provides protection against condensation.

  2. 100mm Combi Jute insulation

  3. 22mm Gutex Multiplex Top over insulation and joists. This woodfibre board provides additional insulation and ensures that there isn’t a cold bridge between the existing joists and the flooring above.

  4. 22mm Caberdek with glued or taped joints for airtightness. The Caberdek is tongue and grooved chipboard, and forms the critical airtight line at floor level. Different floor finishes (engineered timber, carpet or marmoleum) will be installed on top of the Caberdek.

I had a brief walk up and down the Caberdek strip today, and was struck that my new home will not only be well insulated but will be very, very quiet. No creaking floorboards. Reduced impact noise due to the various layers. A peaceful, calm home.
