The EcoBungalow

I originally trained as an architect. I soon developed a wider interest in towns and cities, and specialised in urban design. One thing led to another, and I also became a town planner. I was a founding director of Tibbalds Planning and Urban Design, working with a great team for over 20 years. I've always loved spending time in the mountains - walking, climbing and skiing. I decided to change my life's priorities, and so I moved from London to Kendal in 2020, and retired in 2021 to spend more time enjoying the outdoor lifestyle I love so much.

I've spent my career masterplanning new developments, and devising regeneration strategies for existing towns. Always trying to make places, new and old, as environmentally sustainable as possible. The move to Kendal has given me the opportunity to do this at the 'micro' level of a single home. How energy efficient can I make my new place? How close can I get to embracing PassivHaus principles? Can a retrofit of an existing home provide inspiration for others, showing that modest little buildings like my bungalow can be transformed?

I bought my 1970s bungalow in December 2020, appointed Hesketh Hayden as architect in late 2021, and secured planning permission in May 2022. Working with Alex Burn of 4Site Engineering & Construction, we started on site in August 2023. I moved back home in May 2024, and the build was completed at the end of July 2024.
